Manchester by the Sea (2016)

Lee has lost everything and now his brother has died and he has to take care of his nephew Patrick, aka Patty. This is something Lee is not ready to do and he has to figure out how he as well as Patrick should live their lives.

Is it not interesting that something can be very enjoyable or entertaining for some people and completely the opposite for others. Well this movie is very popular among a lot of people and I’m unfortunately not one of them. The first thing I didn’t like about the movie happened right at the start. They did some time jumps but they didn’t really show that well that it was a time jump and it all made me so confused. I didn’t know what was the present and the past. It did become a lot clearer after a while but I think it could have been a lot clearer from the beginning, so I could have understood what was going on right from the start.

The other problem I had was the main character Lee. I didn’t even like him for a minute in the movie, he was just not likable. I don’t however think the intention was for him to be likable but still… Does Casey Affleck deserve an Oscar for this role, I sure don’t think so. Well then again, I’m not the biggest fan of Casey Affleck, not just because of this role (which wasn’t that special, I would say) but also because of the rumors going around about him. Then again, should we really listen to rumors? Maybe not, maybe not. He was good as the main character Lee, but Oscar good? I don’t know. Then again, I did not like the character Lee either.

I’m not going to say the movie’s bad though, because it was a little entertaining and unique. I felt like this was a typical tv-series movie. What I mean is that it felt like a “real life” drama series but squeezed into a movie. Pretty interesting characters (except Lee), pretty dull environment and pretty fascinating story. Like I said in the beginning, not everyone can like the same thing. I didn’t really like this movie very much, it was okay but I do however know a lot of people who like it. I guess you just have to see if it’s your cup of tea or not.

My rating: 6/10 🚤

Great review! Love an alternative point-of-view. 🙂 I haven’t seen this film, but still wished Denzel Washington had won the Oscar instead.

Well, for me, this movie was one of my favourites from last year. Mainly due to the performances and the narrative. The story jumps served to make a better reaction from the audience as the burning house showcases in the last falshback, however I can see your confusion. As far as Casey Affleck goes, I think he deserved the award, but that’s just my personal opinion, even though the rumors shocked me. But great reading your perspective on it ! 🙂
