The Post (2017)

5a4ee78c24653December 2017   Ι   1h 56min   Ι   Steven Spielberg

It’s a battle between the press and the government, and every newspaper wants to report the latest news first. Kay Graham is doing everything she can to uphold her dead husband’s company but it’s not easy to be the country’s first female newspaper publisher.

I didn’t know much about this movie before I watched it but I thought that if both Tom Hanks and Meryl Streep were in this movie, it must be great. Oh yeah I might have been a tad wrong. I’m really starting to see how true story movies are not my thing at all. If you’ve been following me for a while you might be aware that I’m not really fond of true story movies and Oscar nominated movies. I can say that I have not improved because this movie was so freaking boring.

To me, the characters were pretty dull but I really liked Meryl Streep’s character Kay Graham most of the time but the other characters didn’t really interest me. Now the fact that men thought a woman couldn’t be their boss is just absurd, and you know the fact that it’s based on a true story makes it worse because it shows how oppressed one can be at work just because one is a certain gender.

When it comes to the story in general I guess it was pretty interesting sometimes, well almost never but it had its moments. I just didn’t think this was a very interesting or enjoyable movie to watch and it went in a very slow pace which was just quite boring. I am unfortunately not going to watch this movie again but I really do hope some of you enjoyed it more.

Every Day (2018)

Imagine waking up in a new body every day, then imagine someone falling in love with that person. Rhiannon is just a normal teenage girl, who one day got to experience the best day of her life with her boyfriend. She later on finds out that it was not her boyfriend but instead A, who changes body every day. As time progresses, Rhiannon starts to fall more and more for this person named A but it’s difficult when you don’t know which body A is going to wake up in next.

What an odd movie. I mean it was really good, but how weird isn’t it to come up with this idea. Nevertheless, I got to see a great movie so I am happy. I feel like these teenage movies with a romantic ending and a fun story really is my thing. Is it now I lose half of my readers? No but they are just so relaxing to watch and you don’t really have to think much.

In one way I really enjoyed that we got to see plenty of different characters because it made the movie less tedious than if we would watch just two teenagers fall in love. In another way it was quite sad to see a new body when you hade just adjusted for the current one. Didn’t really bother me though and I think it worked because we had the main character Rhiannon who always stayed the same.

It’s a high school environment and that is definitely something we have seen before and that’s why I believe this story worked so well, since we got to be in such a familiar environment but it was a twist to the whole thing. Pretty chill movie, I would recommend you to watch it.

The Shape of Water (2017)

5a56819617896September 2017   Ι   2h 3min   Ι   Guillermo del Toro

Elisa is mute and she has always been in the shadow. When a top secret facility she works at one day brings in a strange creature, Elisa starts doing things she never thought she would. You can say it was love at the first sight.

Fun fact, I actually saw Guillermo del Toro live and he always called himself a muffin. He was really funny though and definitely a special lad. I could really see that this crazy movie came out from his brain. It is a rather interesting and unique movie though, and I could say the same for Guillermo del Toro.

The Shape of Water has its charm with beautiful visuals, fantastic shots and a unique story. The fact that Elisa is mute is so rare to see and that is something that really made her special. I can only imagine how hard it must be to present a character in a certain way when that character can not really speak but the way Guillermo del Toro made this shy but strong character was so interesting to me. I found it quite interesting to see the difference between Richard Strickland and Elisa as well. Notice how small she becomes whenever she is around him. We can clearly see it by how she is pushed to the edge of the frame while he is standing tall in the center of the frame, taking up the space.

I really enjoyed the relationship between Zelda and Elisa too. The fact that they are the complete opposite but they still have one thing in common, they are the underdogs in that world. Speaking of world, the environment and the old style was absolutely stunning. I loved it so much and the way everything was designed was just amazing. Great job Paul D. Austerberry!

The movie is overall unique but it’s almost a bit too odd for me regarding the Amphibian Man and Elisa, and also the ending. It’s not really something I enjoy watching very much, even if I really liked their relationship. Guillermo del Toro’s crazy mind is just not my cup of tea. The only movie that’s been a hit for me is Pacific Rim. Glad he won best picture and director though.
